Traditional Home, "Ocean’s 3: Beauty and the Beach," May 2009
The editorial focuses on the Oceans 3 Showhouse in Montauk with interior designer Philip Gorrivan at the helm. Gorrivan creates more than a comfortable yet elegant, weekend beach retreat with “a little bit of whimsy”; he takes the ambience, the playfulness, the warmth and the textures of the outside surroundings and brings them in, creating an experience that is the epitome of what a beach house should be.

This amazing sea-side house is situated on the dunes with panoramic views of the Atlantic. Gray sea, blue sky, warm sun and sand prevail here. Gorrivan wanted to reference the sea and sand in the wall finishes, so Superstrata created the bespoke plaster finish that graces the walls of the great room and kitchen area specifically for him. “Importantly, the wall treatment adds texture and warmth while still deferring to the ocean views. ‘The Atlantic is gray, not blue," Gorrivan insists, "and this plaster finish really picks up its colors."

In order to achieve the final result, Superstrata combined two different plasters, Marmorino and Stucco-Marmo, with three colors in three separate layers. To create the final look and texture, which allows all three layers to become visible at various points, we hand sanded the surface of the finish. The resulting texture is reminiscent of windswept footprints in the sand.
